Seeking to help push a $500 billion transportation bill out of congressional gridlock, Inland Rep. Ken Calvert on Thursday pressed a plan to help fund the landmark legislation by charging fees on goods shipped in and out of U.S. ports.

Congressman Ken Calvert worked with members of the Projection Forces Subcommittee to pass out of subcommittee H.R. 1815, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2006. The bill provides for an additional 42 C-17 aircraft to enable the Air force to meet its future airlift needs.

THE RESTRICTIONS on Iraq war funding drawn up by the House Democratic leadership are exquisitely tailored to bring together the party's leftist and centrist wings. For the Out of Iraq Caucus, which demands that Congress force a withdrawal of all U.S. troops by the end of this year, there is language that appears to deliver that mandate, albeit indirectly.

AFTER WEEKS OF internal strife, House Democrats have brought forth their proposal for forcing President Bush to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq by 2008. The plan is an unruly mess: bad public policy, bad precedent and bad politics. If the legislation passes, Bush says he'll veto it, as well he should.

Today Congressman Ken Calvert (R-CA) introduced an amendment to the Homeland Security Appropriations Bill during the full committee mark up to extend E-Verify for ten years. E-Verify, the only tool available to employers to voluntarily check the work status of new employees, is set to expire November 30, 2008.
