Rep. Calvert Votes for the Parents Bill of Rights
Today, Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-41) voted along with a majority (213 to 208) of the House of Representatives in approving H.R. 5, the Parents Bill of Rights. Rep. Calvert is an original cosponsor of the legislation, which upholds the rights of parents to ensure their children receive the best education and prioritizes school transparency.
“No one cares more about the interests of a child than the parents who brought them into the world,” said Rep. Calvert. “That’s why I believe we must protect parental rights to make decisions for their children. The Parents Bill of Rights will help defend these basic principles, which are supported across the political spectrum. H.R. 5 will also guarantee parents know what their children are being taught in school.”
This Parents Bill of Rights clarifies that parents have a right to know what is happening in their child’s school and maintain the right to make decisions about their child’s education. This bill ensures five commonsense principles are met by our schools:
1. Parents have the right to know what's being taught;
2. Parents have the right to be heard;
3. Parents have the right to see the school budget and spending;
4. Parents have the right to protect their child’s privacy; and
5. Parents have the right to be updated on any violent activity at school.
