Rep. Calvert Votes Against Government Shutdown

September 29, 2023

Today, Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-41) issued the following statement regarding a possible federal government shutdown:

“Last night, I voted along with my House colleagues to pass three individual appropriations bills that included House Republican policy priorities. Together with the VA-Military Construction appropriation bill approved earlier this year, the House has now passed four of the twelve annual individual appropriations bills and 73% of all discretionary spending. The Senate has passed zero.

With the federal fiscal year ending on Saturday at midnight, it’s clear we need a short-term funding bill (continuing resolution or CR) to keep the government open until we complete that work. That is why I voted today for a CR to avoid a government shutdown, secure our border and cut overall funding to address our mounting fiscal challenges. Unfortunately, all House Democrats and a small number of House Republicans opposed the bill, and it was defeated.

I don’t think a government shutdown solves anything. If we do find ourselves in an unfortunate shutdown, I have asked for my pay to be suspended, and my office will remain open to serve constituents. I will remain in D.C. working to find solutions to this impasse.”
