Rep. Calvert Urges Deployment of USNS Mercy to Port of Los Angeles
Today, Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-42) sent a letter to Secretary of Defense Mark Esper requesting the deployment of the USNS Mercy naval hospital ship to the Port of Los Angeles to aid the Southern California region’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The USNS Mercy has the patient beds and medical staff in place to provide a major expansion of Southern California’s capacity to treat people infected with COVID-19,” said Rep. Calvert. “The USNS Mercy is currently in San Diego and can quickly move to Los Angeles to increase our medical surge capacity. I urge Secretary Esper to act quickly and allow our tremendously talented military physicians and medical personnel to help care for non-COVID-19 related patients so that our medical teams on the ground in LA can focus on treating those suffering from this virus.”
