Rep. Calvert Urges Biden Administration to Stop Indoctrinating Students with Critical Race Theory

May 7, 2021

Today, Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-42) and 20 of his House colleagues sent a letter to President Joe Biden urging him to withdraw the Department of Education's proposed rule prioritizing grants for American History and Civics Education programs that tailor their curriculum around Critical Race Theory.

"America is not a racist country and our tax dollars should not be spent to indoctrinate our children to believe that falsehood," said Rep. Calvert. "Students should be taught history in a fact-based manner, which of course includes slavery and the civil rights struggle of minorities. These appalling chapters in our history underscore the imperfect nature of our country. Our path to becoming a more perfect republic must ensure that no American is ever defined solely by the color of his or her skin. We should allow our local schools to teach our students how to think objectively and critically, not have a federal agency in Washington, D.C. tell them what to think."

On April 19, 2021 the U.S. Department of Education published a proposed rule prioritizing American History and Civics Education grant funding for projects that incorporate Critical Race Theory. As stated in the proposed rule, proposed projects must demonstrate how they "take into account systemic marginalization, biases, inequities, and discriminatory policy and practice in American history."
