Rep. Calvert Statement on State of the Union

Press Release

Today, Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-42) issued the following statement on the State of the Union Address:

“There’s no doubt that we live in a polarized political environment right now, but if you stop and focus on the actual policies the President is outlining you will see that these are generally common-sense ideas that have broad support in our country. I believe we can accomplish tremendous things if we put politics aside and just focus on what’s best for American families."

“The President has once again made a compelling case supporting a secure border that includes a mix of people, technology and a wall.  I hope Democrats can put aside politics and return to the table to negotiate on how we can secure our border against illegal immigration and the trafficking of women, children and drugs.  As a Californian, I understand that physical walls work.  The modest request that the President is making - .12% of the annual federal budget – to continue building along the southern border has been previously supported by both parties.  America continues to be one of the most generous countries in the world when it comes to legal immigration but that proud tradition, rooted in the Rule of Law, can only continue if we distinguish between legal and illegal entry to our country and enforce the sovereignty of our nation."

“As the President has highlighted and as we see in our monthly job and wage growth data, the economy is delivering tremendous opportunities for middle-class American workers. Low unemployment and a steady rise in the labor participation rates shows that Republican policies are working to give every day Americans more opportunity to better their lives on their terms. Between our pro-growth tax cuts for job creators and middle-class taxpayers, and putting the brakes on job-killing regulations, the Republican economic agenda is working – this is not the time to turn back.”

Health Care

“I am happy to see the President focus on reducing the cost of health care and prescription drugs because I know this is a major concern for middle-class Americans in my district and around the country. We have some of the most advanced health care treatments and innovations of any nation around the globe. We need to continue to invest in research and advance policies that expand access as well as improve the affordability of these breakthroughs.”

National Security

“As the top Republican on the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, I am interested in the President’s remarks about our national security. Over the past two years we have made important investments rebuilding our military after years of underinvestment, and it’s critical we continue to provide the resources our men and women in uniform need to carry out their missions. American leadership is critical in curbing the advances of aggressive adversaries, such as Russia and China, as well as holding corrupt regimes, like Assad in Syria and Maduro in Venezuela, accountable for their actions. Our national security interests demand we send our adversaries a strong message and maintain our superiority in land, sea, air and technology.”
