Rep. Calvert Statement on Kabul Airstrike

September 17, 2021

Today, Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-42), the Ranking Republican on the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, issued the following statement regarding the August 29th airstrike in Kabul:

"Today, the Pentagon confirmed more death and tragedy as a result of President Biden's disastrously executed withdrawal from Afghanistan. The mistaken drone strike that killed 10 Afghan civilians, including seven children, underscores the limitations of the ‘over-the-horizon' approach to counterterrorism President Biden has claimed will keep Americans safe. This horrific accident has done exactly the opposite and will undoubtedly be used by terrorist organizations to recruit terrorists and inspire future attacks against America. The missteps taken by our national security leaders in the past few months has shaken the confidence of the American people and our allies. As the Ranking Republican on the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, and the Representative of one of our fallen Marines from the Kabul airport attack, I will continue to push to bring the ISIS-K perpetrators to justice as well as demand better from our national security community when conducting these operations."
