Rep. Calvert Statement on Border Aid Funding

June 27, 2019

Today, Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-42) issued the following statement following the passage of the bipartisan Border Crisis Supplemental Appropriations bill:

"I'm heartened to see that my colleagues on the other side of the aisle - after months of denying a crisis on the border exists – now acknowledge the crisis is real and demands action. The bill approved today provides vital humanitarian assistance, funds ICE, and appropriately funds the Department of Defense for their support efforts.

Unfortunately, this bill, while vitally important, is not a solution. We must reform our immigration laws and end the incentive that brings people, especially unaccompanied children, into our nation illegally. People around the world want to come to our nation because, unlike far too many nations, we are nation founded on the Rule of Law. That's something that must be fought for and protected, just like the sovereignty of our nation and the security of our borders.

Right now, record numbers are crossing our southern borders, including children. We owe it to them, and to the American people, to secure our borders, provide a humanitarian response and, ultimately, fix a broken immigration system. Let's get to work on true immigration reform to secure our borders."
