Rep. Calvert: The State of America is Declining

March 7, 2024

Today, Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-41) issued the following statement in response to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address:

“Everywhere Americans look, our country is on the decline.

Throughout our economy, American workers are failing to keep up with rising prices which are up 17.9% since President Biden took office. With nearly 9 million illegal border crossings since Biden took office, we have seen pure chaos at the border, including individuals on the terrorist watch list and deadly drugs like fentanyl flowing across the border at alarming rates. House Republicans are the only body who has passed border security measures. It’s long past time for President Biden and Senate Democrats to act.

After a disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, Biden’s weak leadership has emboldened our adversaries in Iran, China, and Russia. We must respond to their aggression with strength and resolve along with our international allies. I’m deeply concerned that America’s national security priorities are taking a backseat to Joe Biden’s re-election priorities. The Biden campaign’s presence on Tik Tok, which is owned by the Chinese Communist Party, and the Administration’s fear of upsetting the radical leftists demanding a ceasefire in Israel are troubling signs for America’s security and send a terrible message to our allies around the world. Now we hear that President Biden is going to send U.S. military personnel to build a port in Gaza, while eight Americans are being held hostage in Gaza, and over 100 innocent Israelis. Our safety, and the safety of our allies, is more secure when America leads with strength and clarity. Under President Biden we’ve seen neither.

Even in the absence of leadership from the White House, Congress must govern and fight for the issues Americans care about. That’s why I will continue to stand firm against inflationary spending and take steps to lower the cost of energy by supporting domestic energy production. I will support policies that secure the border and provide our Border Patrol and law enforcement officers with the resources they need. As Chairman of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, I will make sure our men and women in uniform have the resources they need to fulfill their vital missions, push the Pentagon to change its old ways of doing business, and embrace innovation to leverage America’s technological advantages.

The constituents in the 41st Congressional District sent me to Washington, D.C. to find solutions to the challenges we face, and I stand ready to work with anyone interested in shaping a brighter future for America.”
