Rep. Calvert Secures Riverside County Priorities in Water Infrastructure Bill

June 10, 2022

Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-42) recently voted in support of the bipartisan Water Resources Development Act, which was approved (384 to 37) by the House of Representatives. Rep. Calvert secured a number of Riverside County priorities in the legislation.

"The Water Resources Development Act authorizes a number of essential water infrastructure projects throughout our country," said Rep. Calvert. "This legislation will directly benefit Riverside County by facilitating the construction of critical flood protection projects. Specifically, the bill will support the continued construction of the Murrieta Creek flood control project. It also will demonstrate congressional support for extending the lease of the Corona Airport, which sits on federally-owned land in the Prado Dam Basin."

Murrieta Creek

Since the project was authorized in 2001, the costs and the benefits associated with Murrieta Creek have increased significantly. Congress must revisit the authorized costs of projects from time to time to ensure they remain a valuable use of taxpayer dollars. Language included in this WRDA bill reaffirms congressional commitment to the Murrieta Creek project, resetting the authorized cost to reflect current cost estimates, and moving us one step closer to resuming construction.

Corona Airport

The Corona Municipal Airport operates on land owned by the Corps of Engineers, and WRDA 2022 includes language encouraging the Corps to approve an extension of the lease once it expires, allowing this important asset in our community to remain operational and continue supporting local small businesses.
