Rep. Calvert Secures Funding for Local Flood Control Projects
Today, Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-42) announced that, at his request, funding for 42nd Congressional District flood control projects was included in the Fiscal Year 2023 Energy and Water Appropriations bill. The bill was advanced today by the House Appropriations Committee and will now head to the House floor for consideration. Funding included in the bill for local projects is allocated within their respective agency program accounts and does not raise the overall spending level of the bill.
The bill includes $8.5 million for the Murrieta Creek Flood Control Project, which was requested by the Riverside County Flood Control and Water Conservation District. The construction will be carried out by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The requested funding would be used to initiate construction on Phase 2B of the Murrieta Creek project. The cities of Temecula and Murrieta are partners in the project and supported the funding request.
"The funding for the Murrieta Creek project will allow us to continue with the important work that remains in providing flood protection to the communities of Temecula and Murrieta," said Rep. Calvert. "We have made significant progress on the project to-date and by funding additional phases we can ensure our local communities' needs are met."
"We thank Congressman Calvert for his work to secure $8.5 million in construction funding for the Murrieta Creek Phase 2B Project," said Riverside County Supervisor Chuck Washington. "This funding will allow the Army Corps to begin construction of this critical flood protection, enhanced environmental habitat and regional trails project for the City of Temecula and surrounding communities."
The bill also includes $50 million for the Prado Dam component of the Santa Ana River Mainstem project. The funding was included in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers budget request and supported by Rep. Calvert to construct the Prado Dam Safety Modification Project, improvements that were identified in a recently completed Dam Safety Modification Study.
