Rep. Calvert Secures Federal Funding to Address Homelessness in the 41st Congressional District

August 29, 2023

Today, Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-41) announced that he secured federal funding for local efforts to reduce homelessness in the Fiscal Year 2024 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill. The legislation was approved by the House Appropriations Committee and is working its way through the House of Representatives. Approved federal funding requests by Members of Congress for local projects are allocated within their respective agency program accounts and do not raise the overall spending level of the bill.

“The homelessness crisis impacting California requires a variety of solutions from all levels of government,” said Rep. Calvert. “I’m thankful that cities throughout the 41st Congressional District are taking proactive steps to expand shelter capacities and roll out services to assist homeless individuals. These funds will help them in those efforts. We simply cannot accept the reality of having people living on our streets. It’s not in the best interest of the individual living on the street, nor our community’s.”

The bill includes $3 million for the Homeless Facility Expansion Project in Lake Elsinore. The requested funding would be used to build a new homeless facility in Lake Elsinore.

“The $3 million secured by Rep. Calvert to expand Lake Elsinore’s Homeless Facilities will have a major impact on our ongoing efforts to reduce homelessness,” said Lake Elsinore Mayor Natasha Johnson. “The expansion will build upon our success with the city’s existing homeless facility, the Anchor, and provide additional resources to help eliminate homeless encampments in the city.”

The bill also includes $2,005,961 for the Navigation Center Project in Palm Springs. The requested funding would be used to complete the construction of the Palm Springs Navigation Center and provide services to the city’s homeless population.

“We are grateful Rep. Calvert was able to secure much-needed funding for the City of Palm Springs’ Navigation Center,” said Palm Springs City Manager Scott Stiles. “A meeting held earlier in the year with Rep. Calvert and his staff gave City leaders a chance to discuss some of the infrastructure needs of our community. We want to thank the congressman for advocating on behalf of the City and its residents.”
