Rep. Calvert: Provide Ukrainians the tools they need to defend their democracy

Today, Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-42) issued the following statement following Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's address to Congress:

"Under some of the direst conditions, President Zelenskyy has displayed incredible leadership, bravery and a determination to do everything in his power to prevent his country from falling to Russian invaders. His impassioned message to Congress today reflects the weight of this moment in the history of Ukraine and beyond.

Weakness is provocative. President Biden botched our withdrawal from Afghanistan and has failed to make strengthening America's military a priority. Biden believed if the U.S. held off on pre-emptive sanctions against Russia and if we refrained from aiding Ukraine with weapons and military support, that Putin would not invade Ukraine. He was wrong – again. While we cannot reverse these errors, we can take actions today that provide the type of support President Zelenskyy is seeking. Congress just approved significant military and humanitarian aide on a bipartisan basis. The Biden Administration must provide those resources immediately and give Ukrainians the tools they need to defend their democracy."
