Rep. Calvert: President Biden’s Misplaced Priorities Have Americans Falling Behind

February 7, 2023

Today, Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-41) issued the following statement on President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address:

“President Biden’s first two years in office have been marked by misplaced priorities that have Americans families falling behind and more vulnerable.

More than $3 trillion in additional spending approved by Democrats outside of the normal budget process has fueled inflation. Democrats have fueled government growth instead of economic growth, while American wages have failed to keep pace with price increases. Thanks to policies that stifle energy production, consumers have suffered through record high gasoline prices and rising natural gas prices. We need to stop the inflationary spending and unleash American energy production to lower costs.

The recent spy balloon is just the latest example of China’s aggression. Once again, President Biden’s leadership is reactive rather than proactive. Weakness is provocative, and under Biden’s passive leadership we have seen the Chinese and Russians grow bolder. It is vital that America be a leading force for a stable, democratic, and free world. As the Chairman of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, I will be focused on providing our men and women in uniform with the tools and resources necessary to be ready for any challenge to our national security.

Under President Biden’s open borders policies more than 4.5 million people have illegally entered our country. Tens of thousands of Americans are dying from fentanyl, which is pouring across our border in record numbers. Shockingly, the only significant action President Biden has taken on our border crisis is to end the application of Title 42, which will only make it easier for illegal border crossers to remain in our country. We can remain a country that welcomes legal immigrants while enforcing our immigration laws, securing our border, allowing Dreamers to remain in our country, having mandatory e-Verify, and stopping the flow of illegal drugs.

If we are going to provide Americans with economic relief and secure our nation from threats abroad and at the border, we need to work together. I hope President Biden will work with House Republicans to change the direction of our country.”
