Rep. Calvert Praises FY22 Appropriations Bill for Rejecting Proposed Cuts to Defense Funding

March 9, 2022

Today, Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-42), the Ranking Republican on the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, praised the Fiscal Year 2022 Appropriations bill for including a $32.5 billion increase in defense funding over last year's levels. Previously, President Biden and House Democrats proposed a real-dollars cut to defense funding.

"For months, I have been negotiating with my House colleagues across the aisle to reject proposed funding cuts to our national security at a time when we could least afford it," said Rep. Calvert. "Along with my House Republican colleagues, I made it clear that we would not support any bill that cut defense funding. After bipartisan negotiations, I'm thankful those cuts have been rejected and there is an agreement to adequately invest in America's security. It's critical that we both send a message to our adversaries that our military strength is a priority and that we take the steps to rapidly rise to meet growing threats around the globe. Russia's aggression is not theoretical, it's on the move and killing innocent people as it seeks to destroy a democratic nation. The United States and our allies must have the fighting forces in place to stand up to enemies of liberty now and in the future."

The Fiscal Year 2022 Appropriations bill increases national security spending by 5.6% over FY21 levels, which is $4.5 billion over the Fiscal Year 2022 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). To support Ukraine and counter Russia's aggression, the bill includes $13.6 billion in critical military, economic, and humanitarian assistance to help respond to the ongoing invasion and massive displacement of people. The bill also fully funds a 2.7% military pay raise for our men and women in uniform. To support our close allies in Israel, the bill contains an additional $1 billion for Iron Dome to allow Israel to replace the interceptors that were used in the most recent conflict.

"America is a stronger and safer country when we invest in our servicemembers and support our allies," continued Calvert. "I am glad this bill includes a deserved pay increase for our troops but remain concerned this rate fails to keep up with inflation. Congress must address the quality of life and compensation for our troops during these challenging economic times. I strongly support the funding included to replenish Israel's life-protecting Iron Dome system, which fulfills our commitment to our strong allies."
