Rep. Calvert Opposes Democrats’ “Welfare for Politicians” Plan

Press Release

Today, Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-42) issued the following statement after voting against H.R. 1:

“H.R. 1, or the Democrat Politician Protection Act as it should be called, is a poorly disguised attack on free and fair elections in our country. The bill is an egregious attempt by Democrats to control Americans’ political speech and put their thumb on the scales of our elections.

One of the more outrageous provisions in the bill would use taxpayer dollars to match small dollar contributions to political campaigns. In other words, if someone gives Speaker Pelosi’s campaign two hundred dollars, the federal government is going to send Speaker Pelosi’s campaign a check for twelve hundred dollars from taxpayers. I don’t care whose campaign it is, it’s wrong to send tax dollars to political campaigns. There shouldn’t be ‘welfare for politicians.’

The bill also fails to address parts of our election laws that continue to be vulnerable to fraud. As we recently saw in North Carolina, the practice of ballot harvesting, or having campaign operatives collect hundreds or thousands of ballots, is ripe for voter fraud. It’s a practice that should be illegal nationwide. The only people who should be handling hundreds and thousands of ballots are election officials – period. The silence in this bill to ban ballot harvesting and protect the integrity of our elections is deafening.”
