Rep. Calvert Offers California Water Storage Amendments During Energy and Water Appropriations Markup

July 13, 2020

Today, Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-42) offered two amendments during the House Appropriations Committee markup of the fiscal year 2021 Energy and Water Appropriations bill to support the construction of water storage projects in California. Both amendments were defeated by the Democratic majority on the Committee.

"House Democrats need to stop ignoring the science and common sense that tells us we should build more water storage in California," said Rep. Calvert. "We know changes in our climate make long periods of drought more likely, making it even more critical to increase our storage of water during wet years. The goal of my amendments is to provide California with a safe, secure and affordable water supply that will be the backbone of our state's future economic opportunities. Our successful water management depends on the execution of an all-the-above approach that includes conservation, recycling, and storage. Despite a previous agreement to support all of these approaches, House Democrats have gone back on their word and have put roadblocks in place to stop federal funding for California water storage projects. Their obstruction impacts regular California water rate payers and ignores the pressing need for more storage."

Here is a summary of the two amendments offered by Rep. Calvert:

Amendment #1 – Provides funding for the Shasta Dam and Reservoir Enlargement Project and removes "no funds" riders related to raising Shasta.

Amendment #2 – Strikes language in the bill that prohibits the Department of the Interior from obligating funds to water storage projects recommended by the Department until Interior sends to Congress additional recommendations on water recycling and desalination.
