Rep. Calvert: Democrats Passing Bills in Budgetary Fantasyland
Today, Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-42), the top Republican on the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, issued the following statement after voting against the four-bill FY2020 Appropriations package (Defense – Labor, Health and Human Services – State and Foreign Operations – Energy and Water):
“Now that House Democrats have finished this stroll through budgetary fantasyland it’s time to get serious and come to a budget agreement. If we fail to strike a deal, the consequences will jeopardize our national security. As we know from the past, Continuing Resolutions have devastating impact to military training and readiness. Even worse would be to allow sequestration to go into effect. We simply cannot slide backwards on the positive gains we have made after years of military neglect.
The defense portion of the bill passed by House Democrats contains several misguided policies. It sets an artificial deadline terminating the authorization for use of military force (AUMF) that is the basis for combatting terrorism around the globe until an updated AUMF can be agreed upon. The bill also imposes a number of unnecessary restrictions on the Department of Defense that make it more difficult to keep Americans safe.
While I cannot support the bill at this time, I am grateful to Chairman Visclosky for the collegial way he has run the subcommittee and his commitment to our national security, our U.S. service members, and our national interests around the world. I look forward to negotiating a final product that will provide the resources our military needs to conduct their missions.”
