Rep. Calvert Applauds Decision to Deploy the USNS Mercy to Los Angeles
Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-42) applauded President Trump’s decision, which was announced today, to deploy the USNS Mercy naval hospital ship to the Port of Los Angeles to aid the Southern California region’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. On Friday, Rep. Calvert sent a letter to Defense Secretary Mark Esper urging the Department of Defense to deploy the USNS Mercy to Los Angeles.
“I want to thank President Trump and the White House Coronavirus Task Force for making the decision to deploy the USNS Mercy naval hospital ship to Southern California,” said Rep. Calvert. “The deployment of the USNS Mercy will allow our tremendously talented military physicians and medical personnel to help care for non-COVID-19 related patients so that our medical teams on the ground in Southern California can focus on treating those suffering from this virus. We will get through this unprecedented health care crisis thanks to the help of all Americans filling the essential roles they play every day.”
According to the Department of Defense, the USNS Mercy will be in place at the Port of Los Angeles in a week or less of today’s order.
