Funding for the Lake Elsinore Main Street Safety and Pedestrian Improvements Project Secured by Rep. Calvert
Today, Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-42) highlighted the inclusion of $400,000 for the Lake Elsinore Main Street Safety and Pedestrian Improvements Project in the Fiscal Year 2022 Appropriations bill. Rep. Calvert voted along with a bipartisan majority of the House of Representatives to approve the bill on Wednesday, March 9th. The bill was subsequently approved by the Senate and signed into law by the President.
The city of Lake Elsinore requested the funding for the Lake Elsinore Main Street Safety and Pedestrian Improvements Project to install new crosswalks, safety signage, lighting, and other improvements to enhance walkability and pedestrian safety on Main Street in downtown Lake Elsinore. The downtown area has experienced a growth in the number of visitors and pedestrians. The requested funds will support this increased economic activity as well as improve safety of downtown visitors.
"We are grateful that the appropriations bill passed Congress and was signed into law, and that we will be receiving funding to help toward our efforts to activate historic downtown and create a vibrant and active 18-hour destination for our community," said Lake Elsinore Mayor Timothy J. Sheridan.
"Downtown Lake Elsinore is a tremendous asset for the city's economy and tourism," said Rep. Calvert. "The Lake Elsinore Main Street Safety and Pedestrian Improvements Project represents a forward-looking investment that will enhance the area long into the future. I appreciate the leadership of the Lake Elsinore City Council in seeking to protect and improve this tremendous asset for the city."
Under the U.S. Constitution, all federal funding must be appropriated by Congress. As part of the annual appropriations process, members of Congress are provided the opportunity to submit Community Project Funding (CPF) requests to the Appropriations Committee for consideration. Rep. Calvert's CPF requests were submitted on behalf of local governments and non-profit organizations in the 42nd District. To satisfy required transparency and other safeguards, Rep. Calvert previously posted detailed CPF project descriptions online and certified that he had no financial interest in the projects. The funding included in the appropriation bills for CPF projects does not increase the overall size of their respective federal programs. The process merely allocates where approved federal funding is spent and reasserts Congress' constitutional role of appropriating funds.
