After Unnecessary Delay, House Democrats Finally Act to Protect Supreme Court Justices and their Families

June 14, 2022

Today, Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-42) voted along with a bipartisan majority (396 to 27) of the House of Representatives to approve the Supreme Court Police Parity Act (S. 4160). The legislation would extend security protections to immediate family members of Supreme Court justices.

Rep. Calvert is a cosponsor of H.R. 7705, the House companion to S. 1460. The legislation was unanimously approved by the Senate on May 9, 2022.

"At long last, House Democrats have finally acted and moved on legislation to protect U.S. Supreme Court justices and their families," said Rep. Calvert. "It's been more than a month since the Senate unanimously passed this bill and weeks since I joined together with other House members urging Speaker Pelosi to take up this legislation. During that time an extremist attempted to murder a Supreme Court justice and additional protests have been held outside the family residences of justices in an attempt to intimidate them. Meanwhile, President Biden's Department of Justice has refused to enforce existing federal laws that prohibit demonstrations at the homes of justices intended to intimidate forthcoming actions of the court. There is a noticeable gap between the rhetoric and actions of Democrats when condemning extremists on the right and their complicity with the rhetoric and actions of extremists on the left."

On May 18, 2022, Rep. Calvert sent a letter with Congressman Darrell Issa (CA-50), House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jim Jordan (OH-04), and 42 of their House Colleagues urging Speaker Pelosi to bring S. 4160 to the House floor for a vote. On June 8, 2022, an armed man was arrested and charged with attempted murder near the home of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
