San Juan Capistrano is a city grounded in a unique history of Native American culture and the influence of early missionaries. The Franciscan missionaries founded the Mission of San Juan Capistrano in 1776. San Juan Capistrano is the only mission in which a building still stands today that Father Junipero Serra is known to actually have officiated.
The city of San Juan Capistrano was officially incorporated as a city in 1961. Since its incorporation, the city has grown into a developed city of more than 35,000 people. The city prides itself on its cultural heritage and the preservation of its open land. Nearly 40% of San Juan Capistrano is in open space and park land, thus safeguarding its defining ridgelines, hillsides and trails.
