Rep. Calvert Takes Action to Confront the Chinese Communist Party

January 10, 2023

Today, Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-41) voted along with a bipartisan majority (365 to 65) of the House of Representatives to establish the Select Committee on Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

“By establishing a Select Committee on China the House is taking an important step in confronting the national security, economic, and public safety threats posed by the CCP,” said Rep. Calvert. “We should stop saying the CCP is a ‘threat’ to the American people – yesterday, today, and tomorrow the CCP will be responsible for the deaths of Americans. China is producing and distributing the components of fentanyl, which is now the leading cause of death for Americans between the ages of 18 and 49. As they manufacture death, the CCP is also busy building up its military. Congress must work in tandem with the Defense Department and our international allies to confront the challenges posed by China’s military buildup and direct threats to the independence of Taiwan. Congress should also address the significant national and economic security implications in developing supply chains that are not dependent upon China for critical minerals, pharmaceuticals, and other health and technological essentials.”

The Select Committee on China will provide policy recommendations on how the U.S. can win the economic and technological competition within the CCP and will investigate the CPP for:

  • Deceptive trade practices.

  • Supply chain risks and vulnerabilities.

  • Its role as supplier and producer of fentanyl and its failure to stop or control what is coming out of China.

  • Exploiting U.S. investment to power the CCP national security state.

  • Acquisition of agricultural land in America:

  • Pursuit of advanced technologies at the expense of U.S. intellectual property.

  • Advancing its doctrine in U.S. academic institutions.

  • Malign influence, coercion, and lobbying efforts at the state, local and federal level to advance their agenda.

  • Spread of CCP propaganda and its covert threat inside the U.S.
