Rep. Calvert Introduces Bill to Secure the Future of the Corona Airport
Today, Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-41) introduced the Corona Municipal Airport Lease Extension Act, H.R. 1820, to ensure this important regional airport remains open and operational into the future. The bill will extend the airport's lease with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
"The Corona Municipal Airport is an important regional asset that serves our general aviation community and contributes to our local economy," said Rep. Calvert. "There's simply no reason why the airport's lease should be allowed to expire in the future. I'm happy to work with Corona officials to address the needs of our community and provide certainty for the future of our airport."
The Corona Municipal Airport was established in the Prado Basin in 1960 following the enactment of a lease agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. For over 60 years, the Corona Municipal Airport has supported local businesses, tourism, and recreation for local residents and the region.
The City of Corona's lease with the Corps of Engineers is set to expire on January 30, 2037. The closure of the Corona Municipal Airport would deprive aviators of significant opportunities to enjoy this recreational pastime as fewer small, recreational airports in the region remain open and accessible. Extending the City's lease with the Corps of Engineers would allow this culturally and economically significant facility to continue serving aviators in the region.
