UPDATE: Taxpayer Advocate Service Delays
Due to the COVID-19 policies being followed by the IRS, the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) has closed all in-person TAS offices. As a result, the services provided to taxpayers is impacted. These impacts are also affecting my office's ability to assist taxpayers with Congressional inquiries.
I am disappointed and deeply frustrated by the inability of the IRS and TAS to find a safe and productive manner to return to work and meet their responsibilities.
While my office is fully open and ready to assist the constituents of the 42nd District, I want you to know that it has been incredibly difficult for my staff to obtain information and otherwise assist with tax-related issues.
According to the TAS, the majority of processing delays result from tax returns not loaded onto the IRS system or in "suspense" status awaiting IRS action. The tax return processing delays also include amended tax returns. Until these returns are out of suspense status, TAS cannot move these returns towards processing or provide taxpayers with any additional information. Therefore, at this time the TAS is not accepting refund delay cases that are in suspense.
Actions I'm Taking to Ensure Americans Get the Service they Deserve:
  • On December 9, 2021, I joined a number of my colleagues in sending a letter to the IRS Commissioner demanding the agency address the massive IRS backlog and lack of critical taxpayer services.

  • On January 26, 2022, I joined a bipartisan group of my colleagues on a letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen urging the Department to address the unprecedented challenges facing the Internal Revenue Service and bring relief to American taxpayers as tax filing season begins.

  • On January 28, 2022, I joined a number of my colleagues in sending a letter to President Biden demanding employees at Federal agencies return to in-person work to ensure timely constituent services.
