Riverside County - Corona

The city of Corona is a town of unique history and diversity. The Luiseño Indians were some of the earliest inhabitants, followed by the Spanish settlers of Mission San Luis Rey. As Spanish settlement progressed inland, the land became dotted with the cattle of Spanish ranchos. In 1886, Robert Taylor persuaded his partners to form the South Riverside Land and Water Company. Together the company raised approximately $110,000 to purchase 12,000 acres of agricultural land.

Taylor hired Anaheim engineer H.C. Kellogg to design a circular Grand Boulevard three miles round. This Corona landmark was the pride of the city as many citizens would parade their fancy buggies along the circular strip that was outlined with many of the cities main functions: schools, churches, residences and stores. This famous road also became the location of three major international car races in 1913, 1914 and 1916.

Corona soon became a major player in the citrus industry. Originally named South Riverside after the successful citrus community a few miles away, Corona came into its own as it grew to be the largest shipper of citrus in Southern California by 1913. Along with the thriving citrus industry, Corona also was home to many industrial businesses and mining operations.

Corona continues to grow today. As Southern California develops, Corona remains a destination of choice. The city’s rich history and central location make it a prime location for many residents. One of Corona’s newest developments, the Fender Museum, provides an opportunity for the growth of our youth through music as well as being just one of the many new projects in the city. Corona also boasts of top quality education in its great secondary schools. As Corona continues to grow it remains at the top in history, education and community.
